When I was learning how to blow glass one of my teachers took me aside and showed me how to make a plucked bird. I never forgot how to make exactly what my teacher showed me.
When I started teaching I would share this plucked bird with my students. I would demonstrate it and they would then make what they saw me do. A few years ago I brought one home. The enthusiasm I received from the woman in my life, over these birds was a message I could not ignore.
I made a batch of colorful plucked birds as per her request. I began to realize each bird had its own characteristics and when friends and family saw them together the birds took on a life of their own. The happiness people would express when I showed them the birds was a moment of true peace for us. I was told by an influential woman in my life that these birds are brining peace into the world.
I’ve adopted that sentiment and truly believe that these hand created birds are creating peace in the world. Exactly what we need in times like this. The delight they bring to people is one thing but each bird is a symbol for peace. In recent months sales have picked up and the peace is being spread throughout the States.
